Notice of Commencement of review and intent to prepare a new Regional Spatial and Economic Strategy for the Northern and Western Region
Pursuant to section 31(1)(c ) and section 31 (2) of the Planning and Development Act 2024 (as amended), notice is hereby given that the Northern and Western Regional Assembly has commenced a review of the Regional Spatial and Economic Strategy (RSES) for the Northern and Western Region 2020-2032 and intend to make a new strategy.
The purpose of the RSES is to provide a long-term (up to 20 years) strategic planning and economic framework for the development of the region, supporting the implementation of the National Planning Framework and the economic policies and objectives of the Government, in accordance with the principles of proper planning and sustainable development.
In accordance with Section 29 of the Planning and Development Act 2024 (as amended), a Regional Spatial and Economic Strategy shall make provision for - sustainable settlement patterns and transportation strategies; strategic location of employment-related development and industrial and commercial development; retail and economic matters; housing and population growth targets; onshore renewable energy; climate change; marine and coastal matters; provision of transportation, water services, energy, communication networks and waste management facilities; facilities relating to third level education, healthcare and sports of scale; preservation and protection of the environment and its amenities; protection of linguistic and cultural heritage of the Gaeltacht; landscape; flood management; an integrated land-use and transportation strategy for the Galway metropolitan area; identify and designate key towns in the region; and include measures to ensure effective implementation and monitoring of the RSES.
The strategy will also be subject to environmental assessments.
